Waynetown May 17 - Eli Howard Edward, 87, retired bank employee and one of this community's best known citizens, died Thursday night at 11:15 o'clock at the home of a niece, Mrs. Beulah Runyan, 401 W Main Street, Crawfordsville. Mr. Edwards became ill with a strangulated hernia on April 14 and was taken to Culver Hospital at Crawfordsville where an operation was performed on april 5. After he had recuperates ufficiently, he was taken to the Runyan home where he had since remained. Several years ago, Mr. Edwards figured in a "Believe it or not" cartoon due to the fact that he and his father had lived under all of the presidents of the United States. As a young man, Mr. Edwards was employed by the Waynetown bank but in 1895 went to Covington where he continued in his chosen profession for six years. In 1901, he was employed by a Mellott bank after 7 years there returned to Waynetown, where he was employed by the Farmers and Merchants bank, which later was merged with the present Waynetown State bank. He resigned from the bank in 1932 due to failing vision. at that time, he had completed 39 years continuous service in the banking business.
Born just north of Waynetown May 22, 1856, he was the son of Eli and Kitty Ellis Edwards. He was married to Louella Musselman at Covington on June 2, 1897. Mrs. Edwards died Nov 28, 1936. Mr. Edwards was a member of the Baptist Church, the Masonic and Odd Fellows lodges and the Order of Eastern Star. The survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Frank Ramey of Butler, Ind; two granddaughters; six nephews, William Runyan of Vauxhall, Alberta, Canada; Davis Runyan of Fairbanks, Alaska; Howard and Clint RUnyan of Indianapolis; Walter Runyan of Waynetown and James Zook, who resides in the west and two nieces, Mrs. Kate SMall and Mrs. Mary Krug, both of Waynetown.
Funeral services will be held SUnday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Waynetown Baptist Church with Rev. IC Overman in charge. Burial will be in the Waynetown Masonic Cemetery. Friends may view the remains at the Grenard Funeral Home in Waynetown until time for the services - kbz
